Self-driving car startup Argo AI is considering going public later this year or early next year, Argo CEO Bryan Salesky told employees at an all-hands meeting, joining a growing list of self-driving firms contemplating a public listing.

Argo would be going public at a challenging time for the self-driving car industry. Expectations that cars could operate without humans behind the wheel have fallen short of reality, forcing a shakeout in the industry as some startups close and others sell. A sign of the shakeup underway came on Friday when John Krafcik, the CEO of industry leader Waymo, said he would step down after more than five years. He will be succeeded by engineering chief Dmitri Dolgov and Waymo COO Tekedra Mawakana.
