In Beijing recently, Lan Shanbin, a China-based senior manager of strategy and planning for Volkswagen, was showing off the company’s plush new electric vehicle, which went on sale in mid-April. Dubbed the ID.Unyx 08, it was the first product of a joint venture between VW and a local Chinese startup it had cozied up to—premium EV maker XPeng.
