Dinner Parties in the Age of Coronavirus
Zoom birthday parties. FaceTime happy hours. People are reinventing social gatherings with digital tools as the coronavirus outbreak forces them to temporarily suspend social gatherings.
For her 33rd birthday later this month, entrepreneur Sherrell Dorsey planned to throw a dinner party with friends before embarking on a celebratory road trip from Atlanta to Tennessee. She even bought a bright red cocktail dress from a designer on Instagram that she planned to wear at the party.
But with the coronavirus prompting people everywhere to cancel social gatherings, Dorsey came up with an alternative celebration. She plans on hosting a virtual birthday party, via video conference, with friends on March 25. She said she’ll be sitting in front of the camera in her dress she bought for the occasion, with high heels on her feet and a glass of wine in her hand.
“It will be BYOB, virtually,” she said. “It will definitely be nerdy but fabulous at the same time.”
