Dropbox Mulls a Chat “Workspace”
Dropbox CEO Drew Houston. Photo by Bloomberg.Dropbox is working on a chat product, according to two people the company told about it.
The product is likely to be a “workspace” where teams of people can collaborate on items stored in the main Dropbox application. It isn’t likely to take on chat programs like Slack and Yammer directly.
The project has been in the works for at least two years but has recently become a major focus as work chat apps have gained steam.
Integrating chat into its flagship would help solve one of the most vexing issues for Dropbox. Many of the company’s products, like Mailbox and Carousel, have been standalones that failed to gain as much traction as the core app, which has 400 million users.
It’s unclear when the product would be released. Dropbox did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
