Google Ramps Up AI Chip Competition with Nvidia

Google is one of the largest buyers of Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips, which it rents out to Google Cloud customers such as OpenAI and Meta Platforms. But Google’s grand ambitions for its own competing AI chips show no sign of slowing down.

In the latest example, Google recently approached small cloud providers that primarily rent out Nvidia chips about also hosting Google’s AI chips in their data centers, according to seven people who have been involved in the talks.

Google has reached an agreement with at least one of the cloud providers, London-based Fluidstack, to host Google’s tensor processing units in a New York data center, representatives of companies involved in the deal have said privately.
