How Sony’s PlayStation VR2 Measures Up to Meta’s Quest 2
On Tuesday night, Sony officially released hardware specifications for the PlayStation VR2, its upcoming headset for the PlayStation 5 console. The specifications aren’t mind-blowing, but they’re in many ways a step above what most current VR owners have today. From here, we can begin to get a good understanding of how the PlayStation VR2 might challenge Meta’s tightening grasp on VR gaming.
Sony hasn’t set the price of the headset yet, but given the $400 price tag on the first version, it’s unlikely to price the new model any higher. This should make Meta a bit nervous: Sony can’t compete with the Quest 2 on price outright, but it can bring down the cost of high fidelity VR gaming from the eye-watering prices in the PC market while also racing ahead of Meta’s Quest 2 on key VR features. Sony also has franchises and partnerships of its own that could easily go toe-to-toe with Meta’s collection of VR gaming properties, which Meta is largely relying on to spark interest in its headsets and lofty metaverse ambitions.
