Let’s Not Celebrate the Platforms for Kicking Trump Off
As a former insider at social media companies, I can attest their action is not the result of sudden virtue but rather of a lack of moral fortitude for years.
Calling for violence on social media is OK and spreading disinformation is fine, especially if you’re the president of the United States. At least, that is the message tech platforms have been sending by allowing his accounts to thrive until now.
In addition to President Donald Trump’s unceasing attempts to undermine the 2020 election, he recklessly tweeted posts underplaying the deadly Covid-19 virus and spread the word to his Facebook account that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts" in response to Black Lives Matter protests. These clear violations of the companies’ terms of service would get an ordinary person suspended.
