Pretty LinkedIn Profiles Are Overrated
Success is impossible without risk, and taking risks means making mistakes.
Every year, I work with a cohort of 30 women executives from all types of industries to help them position themselves for appointment to corporate boards. We spend an evening hunkered down in a conference room working through their LinkedIn profiles to craft a story that reflects the specific skills they can bring to a boardroom.
As you can imagine, the finished products are both detailed and polished—and look nothing like real life.
When I sit down with founders (or potential board members for my companies, for that matter), I don’t want to hear the LinkedIn version of how things are. Founders are managing new teams and making decisions in areas they’ve never worked in before. They’re going to make mistakes. Everyone does.
