Robinhood’s GameStop Saga Ropes In Musk and Netflix: The Information’s Tech Briefing

There’s something strangely appropriate about the news, broken by Deadline on Monday, that Netflix is in talks to make a movie of the GameStop stock market drama. GameStop is the type of brick-and-mortar chain that internet firms like Netflix have put out of business over the past 20 years. That’s of course why the stock rally in GameStop is so nonsensical and will ultimately prove so costly for those involved.

There is no doubt the GameStop story is one that brings together nearly every big theme in the news nowadays. On Sunday night we had the spectacle of Elon Musk—whose public persona is a little reminiscent of Donald Trump’s—interviewing the CEO of Robinhood, Vlad Tenev, on Clubhouse. The interview revealed that Musk, like his political doppelganger, sees conspiracies around every corner, which of course feeds the conspiracy theorists among his fans.
