Tesla’s Scaled Back Robotaxi Timeline Still Faces Obstacles
Elon Musk has already dampened expectations for when Tesla will widely roll out its robotaxi service, which the CEO says is critical to the automaker’s future. But it’s questionable whether Tesla will even be able to hit the lowball expansion figures Musk disclosed to Tesla shareholders last week.
Tesla has yet to complete all the paperwork necessary to start offering Robotaxi rides in Arizona and Nevada, two of the three additional states where Musk has said he wants the service to be up and running by the end of 2025, according to spokespeople for the regulators. The third state he said Tesla plans to launch in this year is Florida, where looser regulation makes it easier for the company to start operating. Meanwhile, Tesla has yet to apply to operate a fully autonomous service in California, where it is currently testing its service with a human behind the wheel.
