The Superintelligence of AI Investor Daniel Gross
Daniel Gross is a low-key version of another prolific startup investor and consigliere to founders: Sam Altman. But a new AI startup Gross has helped create, Safe Superintelligence, could make him a bigger name and emerge as a foil for Altman’s OpenAI.
Over the past decade, investor Daniel Gross has written checks for over 150 startups, including Cruise, Coinbase and Rippling. If there’s one deal that could define his legacy, though, you’ll find it a short walk away from his investment office in Palo Alto, Calif., at the headquarters of Safe Superintelligence Inc.
The artificial intelligence lab is one of the buzziest startups in AI, largely because it was co-founded by Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s former chief scientist widely regarded as one of the sharpest minds in the field. Rather than simply putting money into the company, as he typically does, Gross has plunged into it as a co-founder himself.
