Uber’s Middle East Goals Tested by Local Rival
As the global ride-hailing industry begins to consolidate around a handful of companies like Didi Chuxing, Uber and Yandex, one region that could get more attention is the Middle East, where Uber claims to have an edge over the local incumbent, Dubai-based Careem.
Internal Uber data show Uber’s share of the market by revenue has slipped to 60% from 65% in the past year, according to a person who has had access to the data. The person says, however, that Uber’s share has grown in markets that matter most, such as Saudi Arabia, the top country in terms of revenue. Uber’s share there has risen to 50% from 20% a year ago, this person said.
