AI VCs Go Green

Silicon Valley VCs don't exactly have the best rep when it comes to putting causes like helping the environment or fixing income inequality ahead of financial returns and technological advancements.

But the artificial intelligence boom has forced these investors to focus on clean power. More sources of renewable energy are necessary to power data centers employed by tech giants and AI startups to train large language models.

And as last week’s piece from Qianer and Amir pointed out, AI execs like Sam Altman have some pretty wild ambitions when it comes to getting more computing capacity. That will put unprecedented pressure on the firms that supply power to data centers and chip manufacturers. (For more on the power bottleneck, check out this past newsletter.)

Don’t expect to see VCs investing in wind farms or solar power plants any time soon. But there are plenty of startups that are looking to help increase the power supply or make data centers and chip manufacturing more efficient in other ways that investors are interested in.
