Developers Are Cautiously Optimistic About Google AI

A year after Google first gave developers a look at its Gemini AI—the search giant’s answer to OpenAI’s popular GPT models—the company has now revealed the second generation of its conversational AI models, Gemini 2.0.

Google announced on Wednesday a new, experimental version of Flash, its smaller and cheaper AI, as well as new AI assistants and agents that can help users with tasks like building spreadsheets, browsing the web and coding. (For a full breakdown of the announcements, check out this post.)

Reactions to the announcements were overall positive, even though the new products likely won’t do much to propel Google forward in the AI race, unless the upcoming larger “Pro” version of Gemini 2.0 blows rival models out of the water.

That’s because most of the products and models Google announced yesterday are still only available to a select group of testers or have strict limits on how often developers can use them, otherwise known as rate limits.
