Why Trump Is Good For Mistral and Cohere

It’s been about two months since President Donald Trump took office, and there’s still lots of uncertainty around how he’ll regulate the AI industry. That’s particularly when it comes to open source and how much information leading developers must share with the feds.

One thing is clear, though: the Trump presidency will be good for AI developers like Mistral and Cohere. The reason might surprise you.

Both firms have benefitted from the sovereign AI movement, in which non-U.S. developers have positioned themselves as their countries’ AI champions that will help reduce dependence on American tech. That movement has gained new momentum as Trump has diverged from previously friendly countries, both with his protectionist policies and on the Ukraine war.

Mistral last month said it would build a data center in France as part of €109 billion of AI investment that French President Emanuel Macron unveiled at the same time. In December, Canada’s deputy prime minister announced that it was investing up to $240 million in Cohere, which would use those funds to build a data center in Canada.
