Zuckerberg Jabs Apple Over Creator Fees; Floyd Mayweather Joins OnlyFans
Facebook’s decision to keep tools for creators free for at least the next 18 months could ratchet up pressure on other social networks to do the same. The bonus for Facebook: It’s a fresh opportunity to take a dig at Apple.
In a post Monday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook would refrain from taking a cut of online events, fan subscriptions, badges and its Substack competitor for journalists until 2023. “And when we do introduce a revenue share, it will be less than the 30% that Apple and others take,” he wrote.
The timing was surely no coincidence. Apple’s annual developer conference started Monday. Some creators of Apple apps—notably Facebook and Fortnite-maker Epic Games—have been waging an increasingly bellicose campaign against the 30% fees Apple’s App Store charges on sales of digital goods. Epic went so far as to sue Apple over alleged anticompetitive practices.
