What’s Next for OpenAI’s Ilya Sutskever?

Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder and former chief scientist at OpenAI, is currently the most sought-after entrepreneur in town. 

We don’t yet have the details on Sutskever’s next role. But we wouldn’t be surprised if he joins an OpenAI competitor, like Anthropic or Elon Musk’s xAI, moves that could further strain his relationship with OpenAI’s leader Sam Altman. Or he could start his own company that competes with his former employer.

Sutskever led OpenAI’s “superalignment” team, where he worked with researcher Jan Leike on preventing artificial intelligence systems from “going rogue.” Notably, he also played a key role in the short-lived ouster of Altman last fall. Both Sutskever and Leike exited the company just two weeks ago under what appeared to be acrimonious circumstances.
