Pro Weekly: Behind the Explosion of Generative AI Startups

Time flies! We launched our Generative AI Database five months ago, and this week we added our 100th (and 101st) companies, with inside reporting about who’s backing each company, how much revenue the company has generated, the machine-learning model it uses and the cloud providers it relies on.

The numbers make clear just how much investors are pouring into the sector. In total, the companies we track have raised more than $23.5 billion. Of course, OpenAI and Anthropic, with their well-heeled corporate investors, account for more than $16 billion of that. Still, the explosion of interest in the sector in the year since OpenAI released ChatGPT is remarkable. PitchBook, which tracks a larger pool of Generative AI companies, said U.S. companies in the sector raised $19.8 billion through September, up from the $3.5 billion they raised all of last year.
