Sony’s Subscription Opportunity; An Indie VR Sensation
Sony appears to finally see Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service often likened to a “Netflix for games,” as a threat to the PlayStation business. It’s reportedly planning a revamp to its own set of subscription plans that will see it compete more directly with Xbox’s. If Sony wants to be really smart about this, though, it should extend its model to VR before Meta does.
Bloomberg reports that Sony’s plans for a service codenamed “Spartacus” will fold its current game streaming plan, PlayStation Now, into a subscription that also opens up a library of high quality games to PlayStation 4 and 5 owners. Sony was already gearing up to compete more seriously with Meta in VR with the release of a new PlayStation 5-compatible VR headset next year. A subscription model for content could make that headset all the more attractive.
