Unity’s Parsec Purchase; John Hanke’s Metaverse Alternative
Unity Technologies’s $320 million purchase of desktop streaming company Parsec, unveiled yesterday, may one day shape videogames or AR/VR apps built with Unity. But in the near term, the deal gives Unity more of an opportunity to capitalize on a shift to remote work.
Amongst the many streaming products that let users access and control a PC remotely, Parsec stands out for its high resolution and ultra low latency. No surprise, it surged in popularity with game studios during the pandemic. In June, though, Parsec announced a new enterprise offering with more generally useful remote access and automation features. And as part of Unity, Parsec is likely to continue its shift toward a broader market.
