Warner’s NBA Relationship Fades Away
Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang made plenty of news this week. But what about Charles Barkley? The legendary NBA-player-turned-broadcaster’s remarks on a podcast yesterday seemed to suggest that TNT’s hit halftime and postgame show “Inside The NBA” could be nearing its end if the network’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, doesn’t successfully renew its TV rights deal with the league. And last night, Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw reported the league has just about clinched deals with Disney, Comcast and Amazon, all but confirming the show’s future hangs in the balance.
I’ve got two reflections on all this. The first: This month ended up being the perfect time to launch The Information’s Sports Rights Database, which tracks the current state of all these deals across networks and streaming platforms for basketball, football, baseball and then some. You should check it out.
