The Weekend

The Summer Guides To Read Before You Go Logoff

By
Abram Brown

Welcome, Weekenders! In this newsletter:

  • Where techies should go to vacation this summer
  • Book recommendations galore
  • Plus: What men and women should wear to Sun Valley

These words were written at a cruising altitude of 34,000 feet—or at least that’s where Captain Pat said we were a few minutes ago. Like many of you, I’m using the long weekend to get out of town. Waaay out of town, actually. Like many of you recently, I’m headed off to Japan, where I plan to see if the all new ultra high-end sushi spots in America can shake a fin at the places where the cuisine was invented.

Yes, summer is here! And before you go log off and enjoy the start of it, I encourage you to first peruse our collection of guides below—whether you need some guidance for your own trip, a recommendation on a beach read or tips for men and women on what to wear to networking events like Allen & Co.’s annual media-and-tech gathering in Sun Valley, Idaho.

Abram Brown, editor of The Information’s Weekend section, already feels 13 hours ahead. Or is that 13 hours behind? You can reach him at [email protected] or find him on X.

Travel Guide

A Guide to 2024 Summer Travel for Techies

We’ve curated a list of summer travel destinations that should be especially effective at getting eyeballs unstuck from smartphones and focused on where they should be: water, mountains and wildlife. From Albania’s beaches to Bora Bora to the Austrian Alps, we’ve tried to pick places that will be less choked by tourists and that you can easily get to for a weeklong stay.

The Top 5

Silicon Valley Enters its Post-Hoodie Era: A Menswear Guide

Dudes, if you’re dropping in on Sun Valley, Cannes or any other schmoozefests this summer, it’s time to step up your fashion game. Some of our clothing recommendations—a technicolor cardigan and capacious trousers, for example—may push you in creative new directions. But don’t worry: We’ve also got vest and half-zip sweater recommendations for those of you who want to stay in your sartorial safe spaces.

The Top 5

Sleek Sneaks, the Perfect Pale Blue: A Womenswear Guide

Likewise, for women who are pondering what they should wear to summer networking events, we have head-to-toe advice on how to stand out. Baby blue Mary Janes and classic Adidas Sambas will give your feet the comfort to hit your step goals in style, while our “tenniscore 2.0” recommendations will bring some Wimbledon vibes to your offcourt activities.

Books

25 Book Recommendation For Summer

We’ve got plans for your bedside table. Our list of more than two dozen books will entertain and educate you this summer. Among them: Justin Taylor’s “Reboot,” a satirical tale that weaves together media, entertainment and the internet. Bora Chung’s “Your Utopia” is a collection of sci-fi short stories, including one about low-key cannibals. And if non-fiction is more your thing, Nate Silver, the former stats guru at FiveThirtyEight, will take you on a journey through professional gambling, artificial intelligence and Effective Altruism in “On the Edge.”
